And then there are months like August.
With two eclipses unfolding within sixteen days of one another, this month carries a different kind of energy. Eclipses have fascinated, frightened, and inspired human beings for thousands of years, perhaps because they remind us so dramatically that even the most familiar rhythms of nature can suddenly change.
Astrologically, eclipses are often associated with turning points, revelations, endings, beginnings, and circumstances that bring something previously overlooked into sharper focus.
And August gives us two very different ones.
On August 12, a New Moon Total Solar Eclipse in Leo turns our attention toward confidence, creativity, self-expression, joy, and the courage to live more authentically. This eclipse as an opportunity for new beginnings while also revealing where something may need to end, change, or be rebuilt first.
Then, toward the end of the month, a Full Moon Partial Lunar Eclipse in Pisces brings our emotional and intuitive worlds into focus. Buried feelings may rise. Something we’ve known quietly may become harder to ignore. Dreams, intuition, spiritual needs, and the delicate balance between surrender and practical reality all become part of the conversation.
But here’s the thing we need to remember this month: Astrology describes the weather. It doesn’t take away our agency.
We may not choose every revelation, or control every ending. And we certainly can’t arrange the Universe according to our preferred timetable.
But we can choose how we meet what arrives.
And beautifully, August doesn’t leave us floating in eclipse energy.
On August 22, the Sun moves from expressive Leo into grounded, discerning Virgo, shifting our attention toward the practical details of our lives. And on August 31, Jupiter forms a supportive trine with Saturn, bringing expansion and structure together in a way that favours realistic goals, steady progress, and turning possibility into something tangible.

In the Northern Hemisphere, the First Harvest invites gratitude, abundance, generosity, and recognition of what has already grown. In the Southern Hemisphere, this seasonal point corresponds with Imbolc and the first quiet stirrings of spring.

August 12 — New Moon Total Solar Eclipse in Leo
One of August’s defining moments. This powerful eclipse can illuminate questions of confidence, creativity, joy, authenticity, and how courageously we’re allowing ourselves to be seen.
August 22 — The Sun Enters Virgo
After the fire and drama of Leo season, Virgo invites us to sort, tend, refine, organise, and bring our attention back to the practical details of everyday life.
August 25 — Mercury Enters Virgo
Our thinking becomes more analytical and detail-oriented, supporting planning, problem-solving, organisation, and practical conversations.
August 27 — Full Moon Partial Lunar Eclipse in Pisces (Pacific Time)
The second eclipse of the month brings emotions, intuition, dreams, spiritual needs, and hidden truths toward the surface. Astronomically, this is a very deep partial lunar eclipse, with more than 96% of the Moon entering Earth’s umbral shadow.
August 31 — Jupiter Trine Saturn
August ends on wonderfully constructive energy. Jupiter wants to grow; Saturn wants to build something that lasts. Together, they favour realistic expansion, steady progress, and giving structure to a meaningful vision.
August begins beneath the bright, expressive skies of Leo Season, but here on Earth, we’re also standing at an important seasonal threshold.
For our Northern Hemisphere witches, Lammas brings the First Harvest and an opportunity to pause, give thanks, and recognise what has already grown. In the Southern Hemisphere, Imbolc tells the opposite side of the same beautiful story: beneath the cold earth, life is beginning to stir again.
One hemisphere gathers. The other begins to awaken.
And then the skies begin to change.
As Venus moves into Libra, relationships, harmony and connection receive some welcome attention. Mercury’s arrival in Leo encourages us to speak with greater confidence, while Mars entering Cancer turns some of that fiery momentum toward home, family, belonging and the things we instinctively want to protect.
Then comes one of the defining astrological moments of 2026.
On August 12, the New Moon Total Solar Eclipse in Leo temporarily interrupts the light of the Sun.
Astrologically, Leo asks questions of identity, courage, creativity, visibility and heart. Eclipse symbolism adds an element of interruption and revelation. Something we hadn’t recognised may become impossible to overlook. An old way of expressing ourselves may no longer fit. A desire we’ve been minimising may suddenly seem much more important.
Rather than rushing to decide exactly what it all means, give the Universe room to speak throughout the month of August.
Because this story isn’t finished yet.
When the Sun enters Virgo on August 22, the atmosphere becomes more practical. Virgo asks us to sort through what we’ve discovered and decide what is useful, healthy, sustainable and genuinely worthy of our attention.
Then the Pisces Lunar Eclipse arrives on August 27 Pacific Time, illuminating the other end of the Virgo-Pisces axis.
Here we encounter a fascinating tension:
Logic and intuition.
Order and surrender.
What we can fix… and what we may simply need to accept.
The month closes with Jupiter trine Saturn, one of those wonderfully constructive astrological combinations where expansion meets discipline and possibility meets structure.
When the Sun Disappears: Eclipse Folklore & Witchcraft
Imagine experiencing a total solar eclipse without knowing what an eclipse was.
The Sun is shining. The day is unfolding normally. And then, slowly, something begins taking a bite out of the light!
The sky darkens.
The temperature drops.
The Sun disappears…
It’s not difficult to understand why eclipses have inspired so much awe, fear, mythology and magick throughout human history.
The word eclipse itself comes from the Greek ekleipsis, associated with abandonment or disappearance, and surviving records show that ancient Babylonian and Chinese astronomers were observing and predicting eclipses thousands of years ago.
But knowing when an eclipse might happen didn’t necessarily make it less ominous.
Across cultures, people developed extraordinary stories to explain what was happening overhead.
In ancient China, a celestial dragon was said to devour the Sun. In Norse traditions, wolves pursued and swallowed it. Hindu mythology tells of Rahu consuming the Sun, while Korean folklore described supernatural dogs attempting to steal it. In several traditions, people made enormous amounts of noise… banging pots, drums or other objects… in an effort to frighten away whatever had taken the light.
Other traditions found different lessons within the darkness. Among the Batammaliba of Togo and Benin, eclipse folklore connected the darkening Sun with conflict between the Sun and Moon, and encouraged people on Earth to resolve their own disagreements.
What I love about these stories isn’t that human beings looked upward at something enormous and mysterious and asked: What does this mean?
Witches still do that.
And today we understand the astronomy too. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun; a lunar eclipse occurs when Earth passes between the Sun and Moon and Earth’s shadow falls across the Moon.
Understanding the mechanism doesn’t have to remove the wonder.
But what does an eclipse mean for our magick?
Of course, there isn’t one universal witchcraft rule…
Some modern practitioners regard eclipses as powerful opportunities for transformation, divination or shadow work.
Others deliberately do not cast major spells during eclipses, viewing the energy as unstable or better suited to observation than active manifestation.
I think there is something valuable in remembering that we don’t have to use every celestial event. Sometimes witchcraft means doing. Sometimes it means listening.
An eclipse can simply become a moment to step outside, look upward (using proper eclipse eye protection for a solar eclipse) and witness something extraordinary.
Journal. Pull a tarot card. Pay attention to your dreams. Notice what emotions surface. Ask yourself what you’ve been avoiding.
And allow the meaning, if there is one for you, to reveal itself in its own time…
Not every cosmic moment needs a petition attached to it.
Sometimes witnessing the mystery is the magick.
If July’s astrology encouraged us to notice the doors opening around us, August introduces an important second half to that conversation:
Not every open door needs to be walked through.
August begins with plenty of Leo fire.
Leo reminds us that our lives require participation. There are times when we need to speak, create, risk being seen, follow joy and choose what makes us feel vividly alive.
The Solar Eclipse intensifies those questions.
Where have you made yourself smaller?
What wants expression?
What would you choose if you weren’t waiting for permission?
But then Virgo Season arrives and asks a completely different set of questions.
Is it workable?
Is it healthy?
Does it fit into the life you’re actually living?
What needs to change for this vision to become sustainable?
That shift from Leo to Virgo is so powerful because inspiration without tending rarely becomes anything.
Then comes Pisces.
The Lunar Eclipse reminds us that discernment has limits too. We cannot organise every emotion into submission. We cannot spreadsheet our way through grief, intuition, uncertainty, faith or surrender.
Some things need to be felt. Some need to be released. Some need to remain mysterious for a little while longer.
And this brings us back to this month’s central celestial question:
When life begins to shift around you, what remains yours to choose?
We cannot control every circumstance.
But we can choose where we place our attention.
We can choose what we nourish. We can choose what we stop carrying. We can choose how we speak. We can choose when to act… and when to wait.
That distinction between control and conscious choice may be one of August’s greatest lessons.
And wonderfully, Jupiter trine Saturn arrives at the end of the month like a steadying hand.

Does one card seem to lead naturally into another?
Where do you see movement, stillness, endings, or beginnings?
Which card immediately draws your attention?
Which one challenges you?
And what changes when you read the three cards as one unfolding story, rather than three separate answers?
August may illuminate things we expected.
It may reveal things we didn’t.
Some doors may open.
Others may quietly close.
And somewhere between Leo’s courageous heart, Virgo’s discerning hands, and Pisces’ intuitive waters, we are reminded that conscious change isn’t about controlling everything that happens.
It’s about recognising the moment when choice returns to us.
So pay attention this month.
Look up at the changing sky.
Listen to what your intuition whispers.
Notice what your everyday life is showing you.
And when something becomes clear, don’t feel pressured to transform your entire world overnight.
Choose one thing.
Take one step.
Tend what matters.
